Italy 2013: ROME I

Our first full day in Rome included trips to the Borghese, The Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain, and of course, the Coliseum!

But first a little breakfast in our too cute room at our B&B.
Oh the Bernini's at the Borghese were as beautiful as ever, and I loved seeing my favorite Caravaggio there too.
After the gallery, we took a long walk through the Villa Borghese.
Next stop: The Spanish Steps! Which we climbed vicariously through everyone else there...
We stumbled upon a Parisian macaron boutique near the Spanish Steps---such a great treat!
After our macarons and a stop for lunch---including a couple spontaneous rain showers---we next visited the Trevi Fountain.
While we were there I noticed a poor little girl looking around and looking more frantic by the second. Her eyes met mine and she came running up to us, asking if we had seen the people she was with. I knelt down next to her and reassured her that everything was going to be ok---thank goodness she spoke English so that made things easier. Eventually we found her family and all was well, and I felt pretty dang good about myself, if I may say so!
Of course we made our wish at the fountain (ha, three guesses what that could've been), and because we really mean business, we tossed in a whole couple euros plus some change---see, we figured if we give a generous offering and do a good deed, maybe the Trevi Fountain wish granting god will help us out a little.
Finally, our last attraction for the day, the Coliseum! Always fun to walk out of the metro and see it right there, no big deal.
After walking around and through the Coliseum multiple times we ventured across the street for dinner. While the dinner was sub par, we did manage to meet another very nice American couple celebrating their wedding anniversary.
We had had enough adventure for the day and headed home for the night as the sun set behind the Coliseum. What a day!

Italy 2013: Florentine Fleur de Lis

Because the fleur de lis is the symbol of Florence, it can be found on everything from flags and buildings to paper napkins and traffic signs. So while in Florence we had fun searching for the many fleur de lis hidden throughout the city!
We even snagged a snazzy leather Florentine belt for Joey.

On to Rome!
